Welsh Champs 1992
Chris Whatley, Ceri Griffiths & Barry Thomas
At the Welsh National Junior Judo Championships held in Cardiff recently, a team of three from Carmarthen Judo Club did exceptionally well gaining two individual National Titles and one silver medal.

Ceri Griffiths, of Rhydargaeau, became Welsh National Champion in the over 65-kilogram category. His emphatic victories included one of the fastest and most explosive wins of the day, a 10 second victory to defeat his opponent by Ippon (10 points).

Ceri has had a successful 1992 winning numerous championship medals with this club and the National squad.

Christopher Whatley of Carmarthen became Welsh National Champion in the under 31-kilogram category. He fought his way through the knockout tournament gaining a place in the final having lost only one bout en route.

The final was entertaining, though short, as Christopher threw his opponent twice to win by Ippon (10 points).

Barry Thomas of Gwyddgrug, must surely have been the unluckiest competitor of the day, gaining a silver medal in the under 45 kilogram category.

He fought in a very competitive group losing only one contest on the way to the final. This was a particularly brave performance as he had dislocated a finger early in his first contest.

The final was a close affair, lasting the fill three minutes, Barry losing by the narrowest of margins. All three maintain their place in the Welsh National Squad and will be training with the Squad at Carmarthen Leisure Centre later this month.

The team was congratulated by coach Mr. Len Singer who praised their dedication to the sport and said Carmarthen Judo Club is now producing a crop of young athletes who will maintain Carmarthenís record of having competitors at the very highest levels of the sport.
