A small team of competitors recently attended the Welsh Open Championships under 20 years of age held in Cardiff’s Welsh Institute for Sport.

There were over 350 competitors from all over Europe in attendance with many National and International fighters showing the public what judo has to offer.

The fighting was of a high standard and the team from Carmarthen showed they were not outclassed by producing some good performances.

Kate Walters, 13 years, was fighting in the under 52kg weight category against many of the best under 20 fighters in Europe. She was at an immediate disadvantage having had to move up a weight group on the day. Despite showing tremendous grit and determination she finished outside the medal placing getting 7th place.

Catrin Davies, 15 years, fought in the under 57kg category and did exceptionally well to reach the final four of the Championships. In the end, after a lengthy discussion by the referees and timekeepers there was a three way tie involving Catrin and two other girls. This meant that they had to fight all over again. After completing the re-fight Catrin returned to Carmarthen with a well deserved Bronze medal, a repeat of her 2006 result in the same tournament. Catrin has established herself as the second most successful female competitor from Carmarthen Judo Club over the past 18 years having claimed seven gold medals in her short competitive career to date.

Gareth Davies, 12 years, found the weight a bit on the tough side when he was moved up a group to fight in the under 46kg category. However this did nothing to dampen his spirits flying through to the final, in the final he proved more than a match for his opponent gaining an Ippon (top score of ten points). He returned to Carmarthen with the Welsh under 20 Title.

All three were congratulated by their coaches.
