Recently a member of Carmarthen Judo Club, The Leisure Centre, Johnstown was awarded the coveted black belt first dan.
Carl Dowing has been a member of Carmarthen Judo Club for over 10 years and has recently achieved a milestone in his Judo career. He was awarded his black belt at the judo club by his instructor Emyr ap Siôn.
Carl has been training very hard for a long time for this award which was divided into two parts. The first was the fighting element when he attended at the National Sports Centre in Cardiff as a brown belt to fight others of the same standard. Here he had to win two fights by Ippon (a ten point score) to reach a final fight off. In the final fight off he had to face three opponents one after another and win by Ippon score each time. It was tough but Carl managed to achieve this part of his dan grading with great skill.
The second part, and arguably the toughest, is to learn and pass a strenuous theory test. The test was undertaken in front of a Welsh Judo Association examiner, at Carmarthen Judo Club, and Carl passed to get his Black belt first dan award.
One of his coaches Louise Beard said "Carl has done very well to get his award and has shown continuous good judo to get where he is today. Everyone in the Club is proud of his achievement."
