Carmarthen Judo Club is celebrating a new lease of life for its club building after the completion of a 5,000 makeover. The club was awarded a 5,000 community grant through the B&Q; You Can Do It Awards 2006.

In June, Carmarthen Judo Club was selected as one of 21 winners in the scheme, having been shortlisted from more than 2,000 entries.

Carmarthen Judo Club opened more than 30 years ago and continues to provide training to over 10,000 people each year.

The club also works in conjunction with local schools in order to help secondary school pupils with their GCSE sport qualification.

Geoff Griffiths, from Carmarthen Judo Club, was joined by Marion Forest from B&Q; Carmarthen to celebrate the grand unveiling, which took place on November 3. The grant has been used to renovate the club interior. The work included the refurbishment of the kitchen, toilet facilities and changing rooms.

Geoff Griffiths said: "We are delighted to have completed the makeover.

"Without the You Can Do It Award from B&Q; and help from our local store, we would not have been able to renovate our facilities.

"It will make a huge difference to the community members who come here."

Marion Forest from B&Q; Carmarthen said: "We were thrilled that one of the winning You Can Do It Award projects was in our area.

"Our staff team were pleased to be able to help Carmarthen Judo Club select the best products to complete the renovations.

"The award has made a fantastic difference both to the project and the community."
