Medals galore as judo squad show top class.

A TEAM from Carmarthen Judo Club attended the West Glamorgan Judo Championships at Maesteg Leisure Centre.

Each of the contestants were fighting judo competitors from all over the country. Some of the Carmarthen contingent were attending their first major tournament.

In the under 16 yellow belt category, Indeg Crane -57kg and Don Bennett in the +60kg both won golds.

Carmarthen had eight competitors in the boys under 12 age group. Anthony Jenkins in the orange belt -38kg won gold.

In the yellow belt category, Alex Beynon, -34kg, Ned Bennett, -42kg and Morgan Williams -50kg, won a treble of golds for Carmarthen. Greg Cotter, -42kg, had a competitors' medal.

In the white belt -34 category Celt Llewelyn-Jones won silver, while Frazier Davies -34kg and William Utting, -37kg, were given a competitors' medals.

The girls team saw Louise Hughes in the yellow belt under 12 category, winning gold at -40kg. Manon Jones in the white belt under 12 category also claimed gold at -44kg.

Three of Carmarthen's qualified coaches attended and Louise Beard said: "This was a tough competition and each of the team acquitted themselves in an exemplary manner.

"Each of these youngsters showed skill and determination and put into practice what they go through each week at the dojo in the Leisure Centre at Johnstown. They were a credit to the club and to Carmarthen as a whole, showing the sport is growing in Carmarthen."
