A small group of Judo fighters from the two local secondary schools were chosen to represent their schools at the British Schools Judo Championships held at the prestigious Olympic Training venue at Bath University.

Each of the team trains at Carmarthen Judo Club, Old Llangunnor Road.

The team was composed of two young ladies: Claire WYATT representing the new Carmarthen High and Catrin DAVIES representing Ysgol Bro Myrddin, and three young men Jonathan EARLE and Tom WOOD representing Carmarthen High and Rhys EVANS representing Ysgol Bro Myrddin.

Catrin was attending her second Schools Championship but had now gone up a weight group and year, she started this years campaign in terrific style but found the going much tougher this year. She was able to gain a win but unfortunately was unable to make the final rounds.

Claire had a very tough group fighting girls that were higher grades than herself, however she put in a battling performance returning to Carmarthen with a well deserved bronze medal.

Jonathan showed great skill and determination during these major championships and deserved a medal placing but unfortunately he lost out by the narrowest of margins.

Rhys had opponents of greater experience to fight but could not be faulted for his enthusiasm and continued attempts to use judo skills of the highest quality. In the end his patience and determination earned him a bronze medal. Tom was probably the unluckiest of the group as he had to hobble off the mat after aggravating an old injury to his knee. However prior to his retirement he secured a bronze medal.

Louise BEARD, coach at Carmarthen Judo Club said:"These young people have done Carmarthen proud returning to the area with three bronze medals and five terrific performances at British level. There are other youngsters within the system in this area who have the potential to succeed at this high level."

Each of the competitors, and Carmarthen Judo Club, thanked the schools for their support.
