Welsh Youth Medallist 1993
Alex Hughes and Chris Whatley.
Two young men from Carmarthen Judo Club, The Leisure Centre, Johnstown, recently received coaching awards from the British Judo Association.

Chris Whatley and Alex Hughes attended a course in North Wales run by the British Judo Association to teach those attending how to coach Judo to all. Each participant had to have already reached a standard within the Martial Art and be able to teach to a certain degree. These facets of their abilities were identified and brought to the fore at the Judo Club by head coach Louise BEARD.

These young men had to do all the work for these prestigious awards in their own time and, in addition, to the course in North Wales they had to show the abilities throughout practical sessions at the Judo Club in Carmarthen. They were assessed in their practical sessions by a qualified Welsh Judo Association Coach and had to prepare lesson plans in writing for each session.

They both had to attend weekends in North Wales where they were taught the finer points of coaching, children and young person legislation together with motivational games and judo for all ages. Additionally they had to return to sit an exam set by the British Judo Association and await for several weeks for the results. It is with great pleasure that Carmarthen Judo Club can announce that both have passed these nationally recognised awards. They will now have their names entered in the register of coaches held by the British Judo Association and be presented with their coaching certificates.

Louise Beard, Carmarthen's experienced head coach, said "Both Chris and Alex have shown determination in obtaining these awards and will put their experience to good use coaching Carmarthen's youngsters for years to come. The whole Club wishes them well for the future and congratulates them on becoming fully qualified Judo Coaches."
